Russell Dewey Gilliam,
87, of Portland, died
Thursday, November. 4, 2004, at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville.
Mr. Gilliam was born in Macon County, July 23, 1917, the son of the late
Willie Guy and Zula Mae Howell Gilliam. He was a member of the First
Baptist Church and a retired employee of Tennessee Gas and Transmission
Company in Portland, where he worked for 33 years. He was a member of the
Business Men's Sunday School class and a veteran of World War II, having
served in Burma. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in
death by his wife, Tennie Worley Gilliam; sister, Virginia Hunter;
brothers, Orville Gilliam, Robert Gilliam and Noel Gilliam. He is
survived by wife, Lorene Gilliam; son, Ken Gilliam; daughter, Debby
(Allan) Linson, all of Portland; two grandchildren, Kenny (Laura) Gilliam
and Melissa (Jay) Hunt, all of Lawton, Okla.; two great grandchildren,
Kayla Gilliam and Andrew Gilliam of Lawton, Okla.; stepson, Billy (Brenda)
Jones of White House; step-grandsons, Bill Jones and Christopher Jones,
both of White House; brothers, C.W. Gilliam and Carl Gilliam, both of

Lawrence Hester,
age 86, of Portland, Tenn., died Tuesday, October 12, 2004, at his
residence. He was the son of the late Charlie Hester and Pearl Biggs
Hester. He is survived by daughters, Patsy (Joe) Summers, and Jane
(Henry) Biggs; son, Steve (Sheila) Hester, all of Portland; sister,
Lou Ella Young of Cottontown; 6 grandchildren; and 5 great grandchildren.
Mr. Hester was preceded in death by his wife, Jessie Mai Hester, and son,
Charles Dale Hester. Mr. Hester served in the U.S. Army and was a
veteran of WW II. He was held as a prisoner of war for 6 months.

Bernard (Ben) G. Parrish, age 72, died November 15, 2004. He was an accomplished singer and
businessman whose family has lived in the Highland community in Sumner
County since 1945. Mr. Parrish sang the Star Spangled Banner
for many dignitaries across the country in ballparks and numerous
convention halls, likely singing it more often, and in more locations,
than anyone in the nation ever has up to this point. Mr. Parrish is
survived by his wife Merle; sons Rob (Susan) Parrish and Todd (Lisa)
Parrish of Portland; daughter, Tanya (Marty) Crum, of Madison; sister,
Leila (Freddy) Busch, of Portland; brother, Truman (Peggy) Parrish, of
West Palm Beach, Fla.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
