He had been a minister for 50 years in the Portland Association and Mt. Union Association of the General Baptist Churches. Hubert Hollis Cole, age 85, of Portland, passed away April 25, 2004. George Lee Conyer, age 82, of Portland, died November 11, 2004, at his residence. Myrtle Mae Ezell, age 73, of Portland, died on November 15, 2004, at Sumner Regional Medical Center. She was a native of Sumner County, born March 19, 1931, to the late Arthur and Hassie Brister. She is survived by her husband, Henry "Hank" Ezell of Portland; daughters, Geri (David) Bishop of Millersville, Debbie (Richard) Krouldis of Gordonsville; 6 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild; sisters, Louise Brister of Gallatin, Irene Berry of Gallatin, Catherine Gregory of Hartsville; brother, Buddy Brister of Gallatin. Russell Dewey Gilliam, 87, of Portland, died Thursday, November. 4, 2004, at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville. Mr. Gilliam was born in Macon County, July 23, 1917, the son of the late Willie Guy and Zula Mae Howell Gilliam. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and a retired employee of Tennessee Gas and Transmission Company in Portland, where he worked for 33 years. He was a member of the Business Men's Sunday School class and a veteran of World War II, having served in Burma. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Tennie Worley Gilliam; sister, Virginia Hunter; brothers, Orville Gilliam, Robert Gilliam and Noel Gilliam. Bernard (Ben) G. Parrish, age 72, died November 15, 2004. He was an accomplished singer and businessman whose family has lived in the Highland community in Sumner County since 1945. Mr. Parrish sang the Star Spangled Banner for many dignitaries across the country in ballparks and numerous convention halls, likely singing it more often, and in more locations, than anyone in the nation ever has up to this point. Rosezet Yates, age 81, of Portland, died December 20, 2004, at the Hartsville Convalescent Center. She was born June 19, 1923, to the late Haye and Alice Moore in Allen County, Ky. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Yates. She is survived by daughters, Joyce Bolton of Portland and Rose Swanner of Cookeville; sons, Charles Edward Yates of Nashville, J.W. Yates of Portland, William Glen Yates of Portland, and Michael D. Yates of Westmoreland; 19 grandchildren (3 were raised from birth by Jim and Rosezet); 21 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Louise Perdue of Cottontown. Visitation will be 5 p.m., until 9 p.m., Monday, December 20, 2004, and 10 a.m., until 9 p.m., Tuesday, December 21, 2004.
