He is survived by sons, Harold (Carol) Akins of Bethpage, Wendell (Bonita) Akins of Bethpage; 5 grandchildren, Kim Rittenberry of Bethpage, Tonya Gann of Linden, Tenn., Lisa Troutt of Westmoreland, Christy Richardson of Westmoreland; 10 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Brown Akins; brother, Paul Akins; sister, Catherine Akins; grandchild, Larry Todd Akins. He had been a minister for 50 years in the Portland Association and Mt. Union Association of the General Baptist Churches. George Lee Conyer, age 82, of Portland, died November 11, 2004, at his residence.  He is survived by his wife, Lola Bell Conyer; daughters, Sheila Raines of Orlinda, Patricia Stewart of Portland, Dorothy Ann James of Pottsboro, Tex., Jo Myrl Conyer of Portland; sons, Leon Conyer of Adolphus, Ky., George Thomas Conyer of Portland, Douglas Wayne Conyer of Westmoreland; 18 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; sisters, Dorothy Sadler of Portland, Betty Jean Martin of Portland; brother, Jerry Lee Conyer of Gallatin. Myrtle Mae Ezell, age 73, of Portland, died on November 15, 2004, at Sumner Regional Medical Center.  She was a native of Sumner County, born March 19, 1931, to the late Arthur and Hassie Brister.  She is survived by her husband, Henry "Hank" Ezell of Portland; daughters, Geri (David) Bishop of Millersville, Debbie (Richard) Krouldis of Gordonsville; 6 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild; sisters, Louise Brister of Gallatin, Irene Berry of Gallatin, Catherine Gregory of Hartsville; brother, Buddy Brister of Gallatin.  Mrs. Ezell was a member of Hollis Chapel General Baptist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star.  Visitation will be Wednesday, November 17, 2004, 11 a.m. until 9 p.m.  Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Thursday, November 18, 2004, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home with Bro. Anna Mae Miller Fleming, age 88, of Bowling Green, Ky., passed away March 7, 2004. She was born in Sumner County on May 13, 1915, to the late John and Carrie Durham. Freedle, age 92, of Springfield, Tenn., died Sunday, December 12, 2004, at Elm Hurst Nursing Home in Springfield.  She was born in Simpson County Kentucky, on October 18, 1912, to the late Lambert and Mary (Austin) McGee.  She is survived by son, Cecil (Sue) Starks of Springfield; sister, Clara Duke of Franklin, Ky.; brother, James (Mary Ann) McGee of Franklin, Ky.; grandchildren, Suzanne (Gary) Minnis of Springfield, Vince (Peggy) Starks of Springfield; four great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; step- children, Dorothy Gamble of Nashville, Teresa Grant of Portland, Edward Freedle of Portland.  Mrs. Freedle was preceded in death by husbands, Chester Starks and Jack Freedle. Russell Dewey Gilliam, 87, of Portland, died Thursday, November. 4, 2004, at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville.  Mr. Gilliam was born in Macon County, July 23, 1917, the son of the late Willie Guy and Zula Mae Howell Gilliam. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and a retired employee of Tennessee Gas and Transmission Company in Portland, where he worked for 33 years. Willard S. Guffey, age 74, of Portland, died December 13, 2004, at Highland Manor Nursing Home.  He is survived by his wife Edith Russell Guffey of Portland and son Dale Guffey of Tacoma, Wash.  Mr. Guffey was retired from the U.S. Navy and had a Masters degree in education and also retired as a school teacher.  He will be cremated, and there will be no services.

Lawrence  Hester, age 86, of Portland, Tenn., died Tuesday, October 12, 2004, at his residence.  He was the son of the late Charlie Hester and Pearl Biggs Hester.  He is survived by daughters, Patsy (Joe) Summers, and Jane (Henry) Biggs;  son, Steve (Sheila) Hester, all of Portland; sister, Lou Ella Young of Cottontown; 6 grandchildren; and 5 great grandchildren.  Mr. Hester was preceded in death by his wife, Jessie Mai Hester, and son, Charles Dale Hester.  Mr. Hester served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of WW II.  He was held as a prisoner of war for 6 months.  Funeral services will be Thursday, October 14, 2004, at 1 p.m., at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home with Bro. Bernard (Ben) G. Parrish, age 72, died November 15, 2004.  He was an accomplished singer and businessman whose family has lived in the Highland community in Sumner County since 1945.   Mr. Parrish sang the Star Spangled Banner for many dignitaries across the country in ballparks and numerous convention halls, likely singing it more often, and in more locations, than anyone in the nation ever has up to this point. Rosezet Yates, age 81, of Portland, died December 20, 2004, at the Hartsville Convalescent Center.  She was born June 19, 1923, to the late Haye and Alice Moore in Allen County, Ky.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Yates.  She is survived by daughters, Joyce Bolton of Portland and Rose Swanner of Cookeville; sons, Charles Edward Yates of Nashville, J.W. Yates of Portland, William Glen Yates of Portland, and Michael D.
