Edith Atchison, age 91, died January 11, 2005, at Highland Manor.  Born in Sumner County on September 2, 1913, to the late Roy and Neely Belle Faulin. Sherry Kay Baker, age 50, of Portland, died May 12, 2005.  She is survived by her husband, Charles Allen Baker of Portland; daughter, Renee Lewis of Portland; son, Michael Todd Lewis of Gallatin; step daughter, Natasha Baker of Franklin, Ky.; brother, Glen Woodard of Ashland City, Tenn.; three grandchildren. Ronald Wayne Baldridge, age 49, of Portland, died on April 7, 2005, at his residence. He was born in Simpson County, Ky., on December 28, 1955, to Pearl McGee Baldridge and the late Harris Wayne Baldridge. James Elmer Barber, age 83, of Portland, passed away November 16, 2005.  Born in Sumner County on June 24, 1922, to the late Charlie and Hattie Barber. Otho Wyndell Barry, age 87, of Portland, passed away on April 19, 2005.  Born in Robertson County on April 5, 1918, to the late James Lucky and Rhoda Gautier Barry. Mr. Barry was a retired farmer and a devoted, longtime member of Union Chapel General Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Lorene Harper Barry.  He is survived by nephews, Robert Ernest (Myrna) Barry, Kenneth (Mona) Barry, Wayne (Sue) Barry, Donald (Martha Sue) Barry; nieces, Helen Widick, Wanda (Bert) Smith, Sandra (Larry) Jones; sister-in-law, Corinne Harper Groves; and several great nieces and nephews.  Visitation will be 4 p.m., until 8 p.m., Wednesday, April 20, 2005, and 11 a.m., until funeral time, Thursday, April 21, 2005.  Funeral service will be at 1 p.m., Thursday, April 21, 2005, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home with Bro. Martha Ann Bennett, age 64, of Portland, died on August 23, 2005, at Sumner Regional Medical Center. She was born in Sumner County on February 22, 1941, to the late Auburn and Bruna Hale.  She is survived by daughters, Shelia (Jason) McCoin of Portland, and Kendra Stevens (Randall) Andrews of Portland; sons, Mark (Kim) Parrish of Portland, and Kenneth (Shelanie) Parrish of Portland; 7 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; sisters, Ruth Robertson of White House, and Aline Scruggs of Gallatin. Marguerite Ruth Bernard,  of Portland, died on January 25, 2005.  She was born February 24, 1931, in Detroit, Mich. Evelyn Imojean Best, age 72, of Portland, passed away on December 31, 2005, at Skyline Medical Center.  Born in Westmoreland on June 11, 1933, to the late John and Bessie Appleby. Elberta Briley, age 70, of Portland, died October 15, 2005, at Tennessee Christian Medical Center in Portland.  Born in Simpson County, Ky., on January 17, 1935, to the late Ernest and Mary Maulden.  She is survived by daughter, Debra Faye Briley of Portland; sons, James Harold Briley of Avon, Ind., Billy Joe Briley of Bethpage, and Paul David Briley of Portland; 7 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; sisters, Sue Liggett of Portland, Mary Lou Perry of Bethpage, Ada Wheeler of Portland, and Linda Rittenberry of Portland; brothers, Dean Maulden of Portland, Robert Earl Maulden of Portland, and Wayne Maulden of Greenwood, Ind. Vernon E. Briley, age 89, of Cottontown, died March 30, 2005, at his home.  Mr. Briley was born in Sumner County on January 15, 1916, to the late Thomas Walter and Elizabeth Kirby Briley.  He married Evelyn Cabler on July 27, 1940.  He was a member of Halltown General Baptist Church for over 50 years and served as a deacon since 1958.  He was awarded Master Workman in the General Baptist Association.  He was a 32nd Degree Mason and had been a member of Cherry Mound Lodge for 64 years. He was the owner/operator of New Deal Tool and Die that he began in 1953.  He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Evelyn Cabler Briley of Cottontown; sons, Wayne (Ann) Briley of Cottontown and Robert (Connie) Briley of Portland; 5 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his sister, Estelle Broadrick.  Visitation will begin at 1 p.m., Friday, April 1, 2005, with a Masonic service at 7 p.m., Friday evening at the funeral home. Alford Lee Brown, age 78, of Portland, died on February 2, 2005, at Tennessee Christian Medical Center in Portland.   He was born in Simpson County, Ky., on June 9, 1926, to the late Brady and Dora Brown.  He retired from Meyers Truck Casters.  He is survived by his wife, Georgia Livingston Brown of Portland; daughters, Betty Brown (Danny) Richardson of Mt. Juliet, Darlene (Bill) Rush of Portland; brothers, Thomas Brown, Jack Brown, Dale Brown, all of Portland; 5 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild.  Visitation will begin after 10 a.m., Thursday, February 3, 2005.  Funeral service will be 2:30 p.m., Friday, February, 4, 2005, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home. Lois I. Brown, age 85, of Portland, died March 26, 2005, at Westmoreland Care & Rehabilitation. Born in Sumner County on November 8, 1919, to the late Riley and Viggie Boren. She is survived by daughter, Vickie Brown (Bruce) Hunter of Portland; son, Randall Brown of Portland; two grandchildren, Victoria Hunter of Mt. Juliet, Tenn., and Erin Hunter of Portland; great-granddaughter that is on the way and that she was so excited about. She was always a wonderful, loving mother, dear friend and a true Christian example. Visitation will be 3 p.m., until 9 p.m., Monday, March 28, 2005, and 9 a.m., until 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 92, 2005. Rayburn Lester Carter, age 71, of Portland, died June 1, 2005, at Tennessee Christian Medical Center.  Born in Sumner County on March 15, 1934, to the late Robert and Pearlie Lee Carter.  Mr. Carter retired from M.P. Security. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Louise Franklin Carter. He is survived by son, Ricky (Mary) Carter of Portland; daughters, Sindy Franklin of Scottsville, Ky., and Teresa Simpson of Portland; grandchildren, Vickie Eden, Daniel Ray, Randall Ray, Jessica Carter, Jerry Lee White, Katie Carter, Elizabeth Scott, Brenda Bacon and Tammy Ray; 12 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild. Marguerite Caudill, age 89, of Portland, passed away December 1, 2005, at Highland Manor.  Born in Sumner County on November 29, 1916, to the late Newt and Commie Carter. She was a member of the Portland Class of 1934 District Championship Basketball team, and later played in the Industrial League while employed by Genesco. She was a longtime member of the Church of Christ, and she retired from The Farmers Bank after 25 years of service.  After retirement, she enjoyed spending her time caring and loving her grandchildren and great grandchildren.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, W. D. Caudill.  She is survived by her daughter, Sue (Ronnie) Ray of Gallatin; her son, Bill (Charlotte) Caudill of Portland; grandchildren, Pat (Bonny) Caudill of Smyrna, Tenn., (Roxanne) Caudill of Portland, Kim (Mike) Meadows of Portland; great grandchildren, Alex, Max, and Cooper Meadows, Brooklyn and Kaitlyn Caudill.  Visitation will be 10 a.m., until 9 p.m., Friday, December 2, 2005.  Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Saturday, December 3, 2005, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home with interment at Maple Hill Cemetery.

Robert Miles Coleman, age 83, of Portland, died May 8, 2005, at Vanderbilt Hospital.  Born December 13, 1921, in Virginia to the late Henry and Geneva Coleman.  Mr. Coleman worked for the City of Portland in the Parks Department. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II.  He is survived by his wife, Betty Simpson Coleman of Portland; daughters, Karen (Cliff) Davis of Hendersonville and Karalee (Bill) Phillips of Portland; 3 grandsons, Chad Moody, J.R. Shire, and Christopher Lacey; sisters, Pat Moody, and Irene Range, both of Virginia. Vallie Earline Cron, age 97, died January 10, 2005.  Born in Sumner County on February 1, 1907, to the late Henry and Maude Bell Kelley.  Mrs. Cron began teaching in Murfreesboro in 1927 and returned to Sumner County to teach in 1929.  She taught at Hollis Chapel, Buck Lodge, Fountain Head and Bush’s Chapel, and she retired after 34 years of teaching.  She retired from Oakmont Elementary.  She was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ.  She touched the lives of thousands of Sumner County students and remained close friends with many throughout her life. She is survived by stepsons, Billy Bradley of Portland and Samuel Cron of Gallatin; nephews, Hugh Stewart and Farris Stewart, both of Portland; niece, Faye Jones of Springfield; 3 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren, great nephews and great nieces.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Bly (1937), and Perkins Cron (husband of 53 years); daughter, Linda Elaine Cron; sister, Hazel Kelly.  Visitation will be 4 p.m., until 8 p.m., Tuesday, January 11, 2005.  Funeral service will be 1 p.m., Wednesday, January 12, 2005, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home with Bro. Catherine Crowder, age 76, of Portland, died October 13, 2005, at Vanderbilt Medical Center.  She was born in Sumner County on November 20, 1928, to the late Tommie and Clara Dobbs.  She was a member of Fountain Head Church of Christ and was a clerk at the Fountain Head post office till its closing in 1958.  She was a deeply devoted wife, mother and grandmother.  She is survived by son, John Dennis (Jan) Crowder of Franklin, Tenn. ; two grandchildren, Chris Crowder, and Greg Crowder, both of Franklin, Tenn.; sisters, Lucille Shaub of Portland,  and Dorothy Dennis of Gallatin; several nieces and nephews.  In addition to her parents, Mrs. Crowder was preceded in death by her husband, J.H. Cora Mae Harper, age 74 , of Portland, died September 22, 2005, at her residence.  Born in Franklin, Ky., on May 8, 1931, to the late Woodie Excell and Pauline Edward Faller Hines.  She was a 1949 graduate of Franklin-Simpson High and a graduate of B.U. College of Bowling Green.  She was married to Lester Oliver Harper on June 18, 1950.  They lived on a 100-acre farm in Portland and farm 300 acres of land, including the home place in Franklin, Ky.  She was the first president of the West Portland Home Demonstration Club and the first Primary Sunday School Superintendent of Union Chapel General Baptist Church.  Mrs. Harper was a member of the Professional Business Women Organization  and Friends of the Elmer Hinton Library.  She is survived by her husband, Lester Oliver Harper of Portland; daughter, Denise Harper (Byron) Wilson of Portland;  granddaughter, Victoria Wilson; cousins, Jerry and Carl Faller; several nieces and nephews.  Visitation is 5 p.m., until 9 p.m., Friday, September 23, 2005, and 10 a.m., until 9 p.m., Saturday, September 24, 2005.  Funeral service will be 1 p.m., Sunday, September 25, 2005, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home with Bro. Helen Jeanette Moore Johns, age 84, of Portland, passed away at her home on Tuesday, November 1, 2005.  She was born in Franklin, Ky., on August 25, 1922, to the late Walter Smith Moore and Lucy Eva Dodson Moore.  She was a graduate of Sumner County High School of Portland, Sullins College of Bristol, Va., and Middle Tennessee State University of Murfreesboro.  She was a member of McKendree Memorial United Methodist Church, where she served as church organist for many years.  She was an elementary teacher with Sumner County Schools at Watt Hardison Elementary School for many years.  She married the late John William (Billy) Johns on October 25, 1945, in Boise, Id.  Following their retirement, Jeanette and Billy spent a considerable amount of time traveling throughout the United States and to many foreign countries with their very special friends, Mr. and Mrs. William M. Hunter of Murfreesboro.  During their later years, Jeanette and Billy were cared for by their very dear friends and caregivers, Karen Bryant, Mary Lee Wade and Elizabeth George, all members of the A.B. Wade family of Fountainhead and longtime friends of the Moore family. The family would like to thank Dr. Ludi and his staff, Sumner Hospice, and Amedisys Home Health for their care and support.  Jeanette is survived by her brother, Lanny Moore and his wife Agnes DeJohn Moore; nephews, Richard Moore, Walter Moore, and Joe Moore; grand nephew, Alex Moore; grand niece, Raine Moore, all of Oak Ridge, Tenn. Roy Odell Jones, age 77, of Portland, passed away on May 25, 2005, at his residence.  Mr. Jones was born in Macon County on July 26, 1927, to the late James Halum and Loney Marie Jones.  After marrying Helen Irene Poole on September 30, 1950, he moved to Indianapolis. Mabel Jane Kelly Law, age 87, died January 8, 2005.  Born December 12, 1917, to the late James Logan Kelly and Ida Mabel Wright Kelly  in Cottontown, Tenn.  Her ancestors were some of the first pioneers to settle in Sumner and Robertson Counties.  She was a member of Birdwell’s Chapel Church of Christ.  She was an alumnus of Tennessee College for Women in Murfreesboro, Tenn. She was an elementary school teacher in Sumner County for 30 years.  She was a charter member of Heritage FCE and for many years served as an officer.  Her life was devoted to family and friends.  She loved gardening and helping others.  Preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Paul A. Allene Moye McVey, age 85, of Gaithersburg, Md., died October 22, 2005.  Born in Brackintown, Tenn., on February 17, 1920, to the late Virgil Ernest and Fanny Belle Anthony Moye.  Survived by her beloved daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Barry Burke of Gaithersburg, Md., first cousins, Pauline Anthony (Earl) Rodgers of Gallatin, Sue Moye Vaughn of Portland, James Moye and Elmer D. Moye of Indianapoli, Ind., Amos (Jeanette) Rippy of Tell City, Ind., Marie Rippy Schmidt of Paducah, Ky., and many other beloved cousins and their families.  She is also survived by her special friends, Opal Freeman of Sengtown, Mary Lois Arnold and Ina Ruth King of Nashville.  She was preceded in death by her first cousin, H.K. McGlothlin, and close friends, Grace Evans and Josephine King.  Graduated from Sumner County High School in 1938 and later worked in Nashville at the Bureau of Vital Statistics during WWII.  Married and moved to Connecticut in 1946 where she lived for 52 years and had a 37-year career in banking.  She was a member of the Elwood Community Church of West Hartford, Conn., where she taught Sunday School.  She enjoyed gardening, canning, reading, playing piano and corresponding with and traveling to see her family and friends in Tennessee, Oklahoma, Indiana and Maryland.  She relocated to Maryland in 1998 to be near her daughter and son-in-law.  Visitation will be 4 p.m., until 7 p.m., Wednesday, October, 26, 2005.  Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Thursday, October 27, 2005, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment will be at Maple Hill Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Elmwood Community Church Sunday School Fund, 26 Newington Rd, West Hartford, CT 06110 or to the Rockville Nursing Home, 303 Adclare Rd, Rockville, MD 20850.
Gary Dale Meador, age 56, of Portland died May 4, 2005, in Nashville.  Born in Sumner County on March 1, 1949, to Irene Miller Brooks and the late James Mitchell Meador. Robert Lanier Shannon, age 85, of Portland, passed away on December 24, 2005. Born in Sumner County on December 12, 1920, to the late Hugh and Mary Ellen Shannon. He was a member and deacon of First Baptist Church.  He had served 18 years on the Sumner County Commission, 36 years on the Portland City Council and had also served as vice mayor of Portland.  In 1999, he was on the Foundation Board of Trustees for Vol State Community College.  He has been a member of The Lions Club for 45 years.  He operated Shannon Insurance and Real Estate and Shannon Enterprises.  Survived by his wife, Mary Russell Holmes Shannon of Portland; daughters, Paula Shannon of Portland, Mary Bob (Brent) O'Hara of Troy, Ala.; grandson, Michael O'Hara of Troy, Ala.; brother, Hugh D. Larry Wayne Slucher, age 55, of Portland, passed away on April 21, 2005, at his residence.  Born in Frankfort, Ky., on December 19, 1949, to the late Jessie Tyann and Mary Frances Feather Stone Slucher. Mr. Slucher was a truck driver for EPEC and served in the Marine Corps.  He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Slucher; children, Larry Wayne Slucher II of Frankfort, Ky., Deborah Sue Glover of Portland, Daphne Waynetta Russell of Portland, William Raymond Brown, Jr., of Portland, Nathan Riley Brown of Apopka, Fla.; sisters, Linda Estill and Jerrie Lynn Manns, both of Frankfort, Ky.; brothers, Allen Lane Slucher and Danny Slucher, both of Frankfort, Ky.; 9 grandchildren.  Visitation will begin after 10 a.m., Friday, April 22, 2005.  Funeral service will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 23, 2005, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home with Rev. Jimmie Lloyd Spann, age 59, of Cottontown, died February 8, 2005, at his residence.  Born in Nashville on November 16, 1945, to the late William and Mary Spann.  He was a self-employed home repair construction worker.  He is survived by his wife, Judylane Spann of Cottontown; brother, Kenneth Spann of Springfield; In-laws, Elbert and Verna Jones, Jr.; sisters-in-law, Dianna Watts and Betty Spann; numerous other relatives and friends.  Memorial service will be 6 p.m., Friday, February 11, 2005, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home with Bro.  Luna Hazel Stone, age 87, of Portland, died January 3, 2005, at Westmoreland Health Care.  She was born April 14, 1917, in Macon County Tennessee, to the late Arthur Harrison and Sarah Ann Story.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Stone; brother, Hayden Marshall; and sister, Clemmie Brandon. She is survived by sisters-in-law, Joan Marshall of Portland, Margaret Carr of Westmoreland, Mary Williamson of Westmoreland ; brothers-in-law, Wendell Stone of Westmoreland, and Hillis (Mary) Stone of Westmoreland; several nieces and nephews. Odell Street, age 91, of Portland, passed away on December 25, 2005.  Born in Sumner County on August 15, 1914, to the late Fisher and Maude Street.  Mr. Street retired from General Motors.  He is survived by his wife, Maxine Halliburton Street of Portland; daughters, Orinda Fields of Carmel, Ind., Janie Craigge of Tuscumbia, Ala., Jeanette Marlin of White House, Frances Rich of Portland, Jeanette Dismore of Portland; 15 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; 6 great great grandchildren.  Preceded in death by son, Lee Street, and daughters, Juanita Smith and Carmelita Adcock. Lula Sullivan, age 89, of Portland, passed away Monday, November 14, 2005, at Highland Manor.  She was born in Sumner County on September 12, 1916, to the late Luther and Annie Hall. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Douglas Sullivan.  She is survived by her son, Billy (Patsy) Hall; step-daughter, Erma Russell; sister, Christine Hall; grandchildren, Mark Hall and Beth Richards of Portland; great grandsons, Jacob Hall of Jackson, Tenn., Trae Hall of Portland, and Zac Richards of Portland; several nieces, nephews, and step-grandchildren.  Mrs. Sullivan was a longtime member of the Portland Church of the Nazarene. Clement Elwood "Bob" Teets, age  81, of White House, died May 15, 2005, at his residence. Born in Keyser, West Virginia, on January 6,  1924, to the late William and Mabel Teets. He is survived by daughters, Julia Ann (Tracy) Colburn of Bradenton, Fla., Joanie (Scott) Wilhite of Gallatin, Vickie Patterson of Gallatin; son, Paul Aaron (Sandy) Teets of Cross Plains; nine grandchildren.  Mr. Teets served with the U.S. Army during World War II.  Memorial service will be held at 4 p.m., Thursday, May 19, 2005, at Old Union Church of Christ in Gallatin.  "We love you and we will miss you, Dad"

Baxter Moore Walker, age 85, of Portland, died May 10, 2005, at his residence. Preceded in death by his wife, Mary Stout Walker; parents, Boss and Mattie Walker; four sisters and one brother. Teena Mary Ella Wheeler, age 71, of Portland, passed away on July 24, 2005.  She was born on June 5, 1934, in Lismore, La., to the late John and Mary Wheeler.  She worked as a proof supervisor for Olan Mills Studios.  She is survived by daughter, Shelia O. (Glen) Seyforth of Portland; son, Glenn D. Morace of Franklinton, La.; two grandchildren, Glen Seyforth, Jr., and Jessica A. Seyforth, of Portland; one great grandchild, Cherokee Seyforth of Linden, Tenn.; sister, Mildred Blanton of Mena, Ark.; and adopted granddaughter, Monique Buntin of Portland.  Visitation will be 6 p.m., until 9 p.m., Thursday, July 21, 2005.  Funeral service will be 10 a.m., Friday, July 29, 2005, at Young's Funeral Home in Ferriday, La.
