She is survived by her husband, Arthur Adams of Portland; daughter, Elizabeth Ann Wheeler of Portland; sons, Elmer Lee (Peggy) Adams of Goodlettsville, Billy Ray Adams of Portland, Arthur Glenn (Sarah) Adams of Portland; 12 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; sisters, Lola Belle Conyer of Portland, Georgie (Henry) Perry of Gallatin, Barbara Jean (Earl) Hoagland of Otisco, Ind.; brother, Billy (Ella) Scruggs of Charlestown, Ind. Flossie Pearl Anderson, age 86, of Portland, passed away December 27, 2006, at her residence. She was born in West Virginia on April 16, 1920, to the late Howard and Jessie Lanham. Allene Ruby Appleby, age 83, of Portland, passed away on February 8, 2006, at Highland Manor.  She was born on January 9, 1923, to the late John and Bessie Appleby. She is survived by niece, Eleanor Quate Slucher of Portland; sister, Lillian Miller of Bowling Green, Ky.; brothers, Melvin Appleby of Portland, Harlen Appleby of Lovel, Ky.; several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by brothers, Thurman Appleby, Kenneth Appleby, Billy Ray Appleby, Clois Appleby, John Appleby, Jr.; sisters, Imajean Best, Rachael Chaffin, and Alvateen Bracken. Visitation will be 11 a.m., until 9 p.m., Friday, February 10, 2006.  Funeral service will be 1 p.m., Saturday, February 11, 2006, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home with Rev. Melvin Neeley Appleby, age 84, of Portland, passed away August 24, 2006, at his residence. He was born in Sumner County on September 15, 1921, to the late John and Bessie Appleby. He is survived by his wife, Agnes Upchurch Appleby of Portland; sister, Lillian Miller of Bowling Green, Ky.; brother, Harlan Appleby of Louisville, Ky.; several nieces and nephews. Helen Margaret Armstrong, of Portland, passed away on Saturday, October 28, 2006.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Joel Edwin and Ruby Mai Lane Armstrong and a sister, Mary Charlotte Armstrong Payne.  She is survived by a brother, Joseph Armstrong of Cottontown; sisters, Dorothy Edwards of Huntsville, Ala., and Sarah Anderson of Nashville; 10 nieces and nephews.  Miss Armstrong was a lifelong member of Cedar Grove Methodist Church.  Visitation will be from 3 p.m., until 8 p.m., Monday, October 30, 2006, and 10 a.m., until funeral time on Tuesday.  Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 31, 2006, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment will be at Maple Hill Cemetery.
Everette Cleo Ausbrooks, age 79, of Portland, passed away June 3, 2006. He was born in Sumner County on January 29, 1927, to the late Dennis and Leatha Ausbrooks. He is survived by his sister, Lois Collins of Portland; brothers, Bobby (Bonnie) Ausbrooks of Portland, Theldon Ausbrooks of Portland. Visitation will be Monday, June 5, 2006,  from 2:30 p.m., until 3:30 p.m.  Graveside service will be 4 p.m., Monday, June 5, 2006, at Crestview Memorial Park, with James Parker officiating.
William Strader Baker, age 85, of Bethpage, passed away on December 29, 2006. He served in the U.S. Army 841st Engineer Aviation Battalion during WW II, was deacon at Rockbridge Church of Christ, was on Board of Directors of North Central Telephone Exchange for 39 years, was a Sumner County Commissioner, and farmer. He was preceded in death by his wife of 35 years, Dorothy Marie Baker; parents, Strader K. and Maggie Mae Perdue Baker; sister, Margaret B. Hamilton. He is survived by sons, Marcell (Darlene) Baker of Portland, Kevin (Julie) Baker of Gallatin; grandchildren, Zachery, Jessica, and Lucas Baker; sister, Lula F. Martin of Gallatin. Visitation will be 1 p.m., until 6 p.m., Sunday, December 31, 2006.  Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Monday, January 1, 2007, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home with James Harris and Doyle Farris officiating. Willene Bentle, age 76, of Cottontown, passed away January 14, 2006, at Tennessee Christian Medical Center of Portland.  Born in Sumner County on January 10, 1930, to the late William and Maggie Wheeler.  She is survived by her daughter, Rita (Steve) Guy of Joelton, Tenn.; grandson, Mark (Kelli) Guy of Joelton, Tenn.; two great grandchildren, Jesse and Katie Guy; sisters, Ethelene Ray of Cottontown, Ruby Johnson of Portand; several nieces and nephews.  Visitation will be 2 p.m., until 9 p.m., Sunday, January 15, 2006, and 10 a.m., until funeral time on Monday, January 16, 2006.  Funeral service will be 2 p.m., Monday, January 16, 2006, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home with Bro. Randale Lee Borders, age 53, of Westmoreland, passed away July 18, 2006, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He was born in Sumner County on August 15, 1952, to William Paul Borders and the late Cornellious Maxine Borders. He is survived by his children, Misty Dawn (Keith) Stockdale of Portland, Katherine Elaine (David) Hammock of Portland, Josh Randale (Kimberly) Borders of Cottontown, Casey Lee (Jim Brady) Borders of Portland; grandchildren, Caleb Stockdale, Austin Cole Eden, Logan Hammock, Taylor Nicole Borders, Hayden Lee Borders, Haylee Angilee Brady; father, William Paul Borders of Westmoreland; brother, William Carol (Willie Ruth) Borders of Westmoreland; sister, Nancy Marie (Danny) Parker of Benton. In addition to his mother, he is preceded in death by sister, Anita June Borders, and brother, Roger Gene Borders. Velma P. Briggs, age 92, of Portland, passed away November 8, 2006. Mrs. Briggs retired from The Sumner County School System and was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Portland. Funeral services were held at Wilkinson & Wiseman on Sunday, November 12, 2006. Interment followed at Maple Hill Cemetery. Larry Junior Briley, age 58, of Goodlettsville, passed away on August 24, 2006. He was born in Sumner County on May 22, 1948, to the late Howard and Grace Briley. He was a Vietnam Veteran, having served in the U.S. Army.  He is survived by his wife Canary Briley of Goodlettsville; daughters, Leslie (Andrew) Tincher of Hendersonville, Lindsay (Clayton) Evitts of Millersville, Jamie (Jeremy) Hutchinson of Millersville, Tammy (Tony) Floyd of Georgia; son, Larry (Nina) Briley of Nashville; grandchildren, Jared Evitts, Christian Evitts, Andrew Tincher, Ethan Hutchinson, Trey Smart, Eddie Smart, Amy Floyd, Marie Floyd, Tony Jr. Floyd; brothers, Thomas Briley of White House, Howard Briley of Michigan, Jerry Briley of Millersville; sister, Shirley Ford of Greenbrier. Mary Elizabeth Brizendine, age 102, of Portland, passed away Wednesday, January 18, 2006, at Tennessee Christian Medical Center of Portland. She was born in Simpson County, Ky., on May 28, 1903, to the late Edgar and Jennie McNeill.  She retired from the grocery business.  She is survived by her son, Howard (Sherry) Brizendine, grandchildren, Ann King and Terry Brizendine; great grandchildren, Alex King, Rachel King, and Evan Brizendine, all of Alameda, Calif.  Visitation will be 4 p.m., until 8 p.m., Saturday, January 21, 2006.  Funeral service will be 2 p.m., Sunday, January 22, 2006, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home with Bro. William Oliver Brooks, age 85, of Portland, passed away December 6, 2006, at Sumner Regional Medical Center. He was born in Sumner County on May 13, 1921, to the late Guthrie and Carrie Lee Brooks. He is survived by his wife, Irene M. Dorothy May Brown, age 82, of Portland, passed away on December 31, 2006, at her residence. She was born in Allen County, Ky., on January 28, 1924, to the late Selt and Maude Calvert. Beatrice Buntin, age 92, of Portland, passed away on July 5, 2006.  She was born in Sumner County on September 6, 1913, to the late Hudy and Lucy Glover. She is survived by daughters, Jean (James) Hudson of Portland, JoAnn (Curtis) Keplinger of Franklin, Ky.; grandsons, Tom Buntin of Chicago, Ill., Bryan Hudson of Wilmington, Del. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Willie T. Roy Allen Callis, age 73, of Portland, passed away May 24, 2006, at St. Thomas Hospital. He was born in Sumner County on June 19, 1932, to the late Clarence and Evelyn Callis. He was a retired carpenter, truck driver, and farmer.  He is survived by his wife, Betty Hornberger Callis of Portland; daughter, Judy (Larry) Upchurch of Portland; sons, Jerry (Judy) Callis of Cottontown, Rondy (Kathy) Callis of Portland, Mike Callis of Portland, Kevin (Cathy) Callis of Gallatin; 10 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; stepchildren, Janet (Bob) Holder of Hendersonville, Pam (James) Woodcock of Portland, Kelly (Jason) Brown of Gallatin; 10 step grandchildren; several step great grandchildren; brother, Clarence (Helen) Callis, Jr., of Greenwood, Ind.; sister, Jeanette Roberts of Portland; several nieces and nephews. Lester Eugene “Sam” Childers, age 75, of Portland, passed away January 23, 2006, at Skyline Medical Center in Nashville.  Born in Barboursville, W. Va., on October 21, 1930, to the late Oscar and Stella Childers.  Mr. Childers retired from Houdaille Industries in Huntington, W. Va., and Fleet Design in Portland.  He was a 30-year Mason.  He is survived by his wife, Joann Childers of Portland; sons, Robert (Kathy) Childers of Wilton, W. Va., James (Dee) Childers of Huntington, W. Va., Steve (Debbie) Childers of Portland, Tenn., Tony (Cindy) Childers of Cross Plains, Tenn.; 8 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; sister, Mary Templeton.  Visitation will be 4 p.m., until 8 p.m., Wednesday, January 25, 2006, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home in Portland, and 6 p.m., until 9 p.m., Friday, January 27, 2006, at Henson Mortuary in Huntington, W, Va.  Funeral service will be 1 p.m., Saturday, January 28, 2006 at Henson Mortuary in Huntington, W. Lorelle Eunice Collins, age 93, of Portland, passed away May 19, 2006.  She was born in Sumner County on June 11, 1912, to the late Levert and Eva Vanatta.  She retired as owner and operator of The Fabric Shop.  She is survived by daughters, Shirley (William) Hall of Memphis, Maurelle (Kenny) Cline of Portland; sons, Larry (Wanda) Collins of Portland, Donald (Mary W.) Collins of Portland, Douglas Collins of Portland; brother, Bobby (Barbara) Vanatta of Portland; 16 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husband, Maurice Collins; son, Gary “Buster” Collins; granddaughter, Kim Collins.  Visitation will be 2 p.m., until 8 p.m., Saturday, May 20, 2006, and 11 a.m., until funeral time on Sunday.  Funeral service will be 2 p.m., Sunday, May 21, 2006, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home with Richard Patton officiating. Kathleen Hendley Cook, age 92, of Orlinda, passed away on September 14, 2006, at Northcrest Medical Center.  She was a lifelong resident of Robertson County and a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, George P. (Pete) Cook. She is survived by her daughter, Betty Sheryl Cook of Brentwood; son, Sammy Cook of Orlinda; granddaughter, Kelley Bibee of Greenbrier; great grandsons, Landey and Riley Bibee of Greenbrier. Visitation will be 3 p.m., until 8 p.m., Friday, September 15, 2006.  Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Saturday, September 16, 2006, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home with Bro. Bill Owens and Bro. Edward Louis Coucke, age 81, of Nashville, passed away on February 19, 2006, at Highland Manor.  He was born in Detroit, Mich., on December 10, 1924, to the late Cyril and Gabriella Coucke.  He was a manager for H&R Block.  He is survived by his wife, Betty Coucke of Nashville; son, Tim Coucke of Bethpage; daughter, Laura Stout of Manhattan Beach, Calif.; 5 grandchildren.  Visitation will be 10 a.m., until funeral time, Wednesday, February 22, 2006.  Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, February 22, 2006, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home with Bro. Robert Reese Cron, age 86, of White House, passed away December 7, 2006, at Skyline Medical Center. He was born in Sumner County on April 24, 1920, to the late Edward and Ovie Lee Cron. Mr. Cron served in the U.S. Army during WW II, and he retired from TVA. He is survived by his wife, Helen Groves Cron of White House; daughter, Patsy (Harold) Hall of Portland; son, Joe (Barbara) Cron of Greenbrier; grandchildren, April Story of Franklin, Shane Cron of Nashville, Heather Suttle of Cottontown, 8 great grandchildren; sisters, Ruby Suttle of Old Hickory, Mary Steward of Portland, Eleanor Clouse of Portland. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Josh Hall.  James “Jimmy” Blaine Donoho, Jr., age 81, of Portland, passed away December 16, 2006, at his residence. He was born in Sumner County on February 11, 1925, to the late James Blaine and Lois Austin Donoho. He was a lifetime nursery man with J.B. Donoho & Sons Nursery. James Harold Haynes, age 86, of Edgewater, Fla. passed away on Friday, November 3, 2006. He was born in Sumner County on March 7, 1920, to the late Charlie and Salle Belle Haynes.  He was a WW II Army veteran, seeing action in Guam and Saipan before being wounded in Okinawa. Mr. Haynes retired after 38 years with NASA as a quality control specialist, where he had worked on the Lunar Rover. He was an active member of the Portland Church of Christ, was a private pilot, played several musical instruments, including bass fiddle, mandolin, and steel guitar. He is survived by sons, Lynn Haynes of Wooten, Ky., Gary Haynes of Edgewater, Fla., Danny Haynes of Edgewater, Fla.; daughter, Mary McGivney of Tryon, N.C.; brother, Charlie Joe Haynes of Portland; sister, Marie Perido of Portland. J. Douglas Link, age 82, of Cottontown, passed away Friday evening, September 1, 2006, in Gallatin Rehabilitation and Nursing, after a formidable struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.  Douglas was preceded in death by his parents, Brooks and Nell Link; sister, Alene Ubbinga; and son, Duane Link.  Loving survivors include his wife Thelma (Steele) Link; son, Shelby Link, daughter-in-law, Jayne; daughter, Shyla Moseley, and son-in-law, Everett; grandchildren, Aaron Link and wife Megan Link, Sarah Beth Link, Nathanael Hall, and T. J. Hall; sisters, Helen Roth, Ava Hicks, wife of Eugene Hicks, Era Wooden, wife of Douglas Wooden; and brother, Wilbon Link, husband of Dorothy.  Also surviving are 16 nephews, 8 nieces, and numerous great nephews and great nieces.

The Sumner County native bravely served his country with honor and pride with the US Navy during World War II in the Pacific aboard the USS Paul Hamilton. Mr. Link worked for General Motors 32 years in Columbus, Ohio. Doug returned to his home farm in the Cottontown area following his retirement in 1984.  Doug was a founding member of VFW Post #8198 in Grove City, Ohio, as well as a charter member of American Legion Post #164 also of Grove City. He was also a charter member of Portland American Legion Post #0075. Douglas was a faithful member of the New Deal Church of Christ.

Mr. Link was admired and highly respected for his fair and even disposition to all who knew him. Immediate and extended family will miss his humor and the quiet strength he exhibited in all he confronted. Doug’s unyielding resolve to improve and provide should serve as inspiration for all family and friends. Friend, counselor, and devoted family man, Doug’s outstanding values and spirit will remain a tribute to him.

Annie Ruth Moore, age 101, of Portland, passed away Monday, May 22, 2006, at Highland Manor Nursing Home.  Mrs. Moore was born in Portland on November 15, 1904, to the late Luther Presley and Addie Estelle Swan Lanier, and lived in the Portland community most of her life. For over fifty years, ‘Miss Annie Ruth’ served as a faithful and committed teacher in the Primary Department of First Baptist Church of Portland. She was a school teacher, homemaker, an active member of the Eastern Star for a number of years and a long-time member of the Dogwood Hills Garden Club. She was predeceased by two husbands, O.O. Massey and George Reid Moore; two sisters, Mary Ellen Shannon and Clara Thomas Oakley, and one brother, Presley Swan Lanier. Survivors include four nephews, Douglas Shannon of Portland, Carey Lanier of Winston-Salem, N.C., David Lanier of North Myrtle Beach, S.C., and James Donald Oakley of Hartsville; niece, Ruth Douglas Lauderdale of Lakeland, Fla., and several great nieces and nephews. Edith Alene Wilkinson, age 94, of Portland, passed away April 22, 2006, at Highland Manor. Born in Sumner County on June 26, 1911, to the late Brode and Mallie Fleming. She is survived by her stepson, Robert L. (Sandra) Wilkinson of Portland; grandchildren, Kay (Barry) Walker, Donny (Teresa) Wilkinson, Ronny Wilkinson, Kerri Jo Wilkinson, all of Portland, Jerry (Gail) Wilkinson of Livingston; great grandchildren, Lisa (David) Ledbetter of Livingston, Matt (Karen) Wilkinson of Lafayette, Ind., Teddy (Jody) Baird of Portland, Trevor Wilkinson of Portland; great-great grandchildren, Hayden Ledbetter, Halle Ledbetter, Caleb Baird. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Dee Wilkinson; great grandson, Anthony Baird; sister, Pauline Fletcher; brother, Floyd Fleming. Vivian Covington Wilkinson, age 93, of White House, passed away May 18, 2006. She was born in Robertson County on July 31, 1912, to the late Noel and Neely Covington. Mrs. Wilkinson was a Charter Member of White House United Methodist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey Wilkinson. Young of Tullahoma; daughter, Marni Leann Groves of Hermitage; stepsons, Boyd Young of Tullahoma, Joey Young of Shelbyville; step-daughter, Angela Pickle of Lewisburg; sisters, Edith Bowen of Portland, Barbara Davis of Old Hickory; brothers, James Hardin of Gallatin, Jackie Hardin of Portland. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Jerry Hardin.
