December 5, 1920. He is survived by his wife, Betty Frances Riley Alderson

(Patsy) Alderson of Hendersonville; grandchildren, Lori Alderson Cutrell,

Saturday, April 26, 2008, at his residence. He was born in Portland on May
31, 1939, to the late Paul and Edith Faullin Atchison. Mr. Atchison is
survived by his wife, Joyce Atchison of Hartselle, Ala.; son, Brian
Atchison of Portland; brother, Ronny Atchison and wife Carolyn of
Nashville; nephew, Kevin Atchison of Manchester; step-daughters, Kim Sapp
and Nesha Mahathy, both of Hartselle, Ala., and Nikki Long of Moulton,
Ala.; stepson, Joel Sapp of Hillsboro, Ala.; 6 step grandchildren. The
body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to service.

2008, at Vanderbilt Medical Center. He was born in Sumner County on
December 23, 1926, to the late Benton MacMillian and Mary Aldridge Barber.

Carolyn Young Jenkins Barnette, age 60, of Montgomery, Ala.,
passed away Saturday, March 15, 2008, with her family at her side, after a
bout with cancer. She was born in Simpson County, Ky., on September 10,
1947, to Floyd Young Jenkins and Josephine Pinson Jenkins. During her
family’s near 30-year stay in Montgomery, she was involved in the arts,
education and the International Ministry at her church. She is survived by
her parents, Floyd and Josephine Jenkins of Portland; husband, Charles
Robert Barnette of Montgomery, Ala.; son, Charles Jonathan (Luanne
Killian) Barnette of Madison, Ala.; daughters, Jennifer Jenkins Barnette

William Carrol (Bill) Covington, age 81, of Robertson Co., born
September 27, 1926 to Hubbard Ford and Viola Warren Covington. Passed away
March 14, 2008, at Centennial Medical Center in Nashville. Mr. Covington
was an honored Korean War veteran, former Road Superintendent for
Robertson Co., worked for the State of Tennessee at the Welcome Center and
was on the Board of Directors for The Farmers Bank for 15 years. Mr.
Covington is survived by his sister, Helen Hale of Cross Plains, Tenn.,
brothers, H.F. Covington, Jr., of Gallatin, and Clayton Covington of
Florida; a loving friend, Jane Minnick, of Franklin, Ky. He was preceded
in death by his wife, Sue Starks Covington; parents, H. F. and Viola

Crabtree, age 94, of Portland, passed away December 30, 2008.
He was born in Gainesboro, Tenn., on March 9, 1914. He retired from the
L&N Railroad after 44 years of service, was a Grand Master Mason, a church
deacon, and was a member of the Portland Senior Citizens Club. He is
preceded in death by his wife, Priscilla Crabtree; sons, James Theodis
Crabtree, Paul Allen Crabtree; parents, Clarence and Ada Roberts Crabtree.
He is survived by sons, Clarence Eugene (Clara Elizabeth) Crabtree of

Portland, passed away Saturday, November 8, 2008, at Kindred
Hospital-Louisville. He was born in New Castle, Ind., on October 30, 1928.
Louis was a retired driver for Greyhound Lines, where he worked for over
30 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther L. and Ethel B.
Dismore; and his brother, Johnny Dismore. He is survived by his wife,
Wanda Jeanette Dismore; his sister, Rieke J. Boggess of Sellersburg, Ind.;
his son, Terry (Renné) Dismore of Pickerington, Ohio.; his daughter,
Elaine (Randy) Snelling of Floyds Knobs, Ind.; step-daughters, Diana
Harvey of Spring Hill, Tenn., and Eva (John) Lewis of Cool Springs, Tenn.;
two granddaughters, five step-grandchildren and two

passed away November 19, 2008, at her home. She was born in Youngstown,
Ohio, on April 23, 1930, to the late Edward and Eva Cutler. She was a
beloved wife and mother and member of McKendree United Memorial Church.
She deeply loved her family, friends and church. She is preceded in death
by her son, Jim Douglas. She is survived by her husband, Jim Douglas of
Portland; daughter, Sherry (Larry) Groves of Portland; daughter-in-law,
Janet Douglas of Lexington, Ky.; grandchildren, Michael Eisenbraun, Tracy

Margaret
McGraw Dunham-Vaughn, 90, of Portland. Born in Logan Township,
Altoona, Pa., to Margaret Ella Lynn and George Irwin McGraw on January 11,
1918. Graduated from Altoona High School in 1936 and attended Washington
Missionary College (Columbia Union College). She married Gerald Oscar
Dunham on July 6, 1937. They had two children, Gerald Owen (Juanita)
Dunham of Lafayette, and Dr. Donna (Merwyn) Crandell of Russellville, Ala.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Gerald Dunham;
father and mother, brothers, George, Milton, and Edward; sisters, Laura
Taggart of Philadelphia, Pa., and Katherine (infant). She served as Dean
of Women at Highland Academy, 1952-1953, in Portland, Tenn. Gerald and
Margaret Dunham served three years in the Caribbean Union of Seventh-day
Adventist. Mr. Dunham as Treasurer in Barbados and auditor of the
Caribbean Union in Trinidad and later treasurer of Highland Academy. In
2000, she married Russell Vaughn, formerly of Altoona, Pa., who also
preceded her in death. She is survived by her son and daughter, 7
grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren. Visitation will be 12 p.m., until 9
p.m., Thursday, September 11, 2008, and one hour prior to service on

James William Dye, III, of Portland, was born in Fountainhead
on February 26, 1921, and passed away on June 4, 2008. He was preceded in
death by parents, James W. Dye, Jr., and Clara Caudill Dye; sister, Mary
Sue Dye Keller; and son, Joe S. Dye. He is survived by his wife, Ruth
Tracey Dye of Portland; sons, Pat Dye of Richardson, Tex., Bob Dye of
Boulder, Colo.; daughter, Nancy Alford of Woodburn, Ky.; 8 grandchildren;
2 great grandchildren. Jim received a BS in Agriculture from Mississippi
State University in 1943 and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He taught high school vocational agriculture in Pendleton, Ind., where he
met and married Ruth E. Tracey in 1944. Jim then worked 31 years for the
U.S. Department of Agriculture as a Soil Scientist. Following his
retirement in 1976, he continued a career as a farmer and a producer of
registered Black Angus beef cattle. He was a member of the Portland Church
of Christ. In lieu of flower, the family requests that memorials be made
to organizations of your choice. Visitation will be 4 p.m., until 8 p.m.,

Rebecca Norris Dyhouse, age 94, of Cross Plains, Tenn., passed
away April 1, 2008. Mrs. Dyhouse was born January 27, 1914, in the
Mulloys Community of Robertson County to T.L. and Nellie Whiteside. She
is preceded in death by her husband, Victor Weiss of the Clearview
Community and husband George Dyhouse of Pittsburg, Pa.; sisters, Louise
Jones of Cross Plains, Evelyn Starks of White House; nephew, Ward Starks
of Madison, Tenn. Mrs. Dyhouse is survived by step-sons, Richard Dyhouse
of Chicago, Ill., and Bob Dyhouse of Flushing, Mich.; nieces, Dora
Hardcastle of Cross Plains and Oneal Gregory of the Clearview Community;
nephews, Morgan Moore of the Clearview Community, Irvin Starks of Cross
Plains, and James Weiss of Goodlettsville. She is also survived by many
grand- and great-nieces and nephews. Mrs. Dyhouse passed away at the home
of Rhonda Collins of Cross Plains. Mrs. Collins and her family became an
extended family to Miss Rebecca and were a source of great joy and comfort
to her. Mrs. Dyhouse is a graduate of Cross Plains High School and was a
member of the Clearview Church of Christ for 62 years. Known by most as
Aunt Beck, Miss Rebecca or simply Becky, she lived a full and active
life. She enjoyed playing cards, dominos, gardening, flowers, travel,
motorcycle riding, show horses and, most of all, her family and her
friends. Upon retirement, she lived in Arcadia, Fla., and Cross Plains.
She was involved in the early days of the organization of the NFO.

was born in Sumner County on February 23, 1922. She is preceded in death
by her parents, W.O. and Allean Carter Freeman; sister, Jewel Freeman
McWhirter; brother, Charles Freeman. She was a graduate of Sumner County
High School and attended Nashville Business College, Austin Peay and
Middle Tennessee State College. She taught school at Buck Lodge and Hollis
Chapel in 1949 and the early 1950s. She was employed by the United States
Civil Service for over 40 years, serving in the Federal Housing
Administration in Memphis, War Department in Washington, D.C., and the
Arnold Engineering Development Center in Tullahoma, Tenn. She is survived
by brothers, Paul (Margaret) Freeman, Joe (Joan) Freeman of Portland,
Jackie (Florence) Freeman of Franklin, Ky.; sister, Jean Freeman Taylor of
Pleasant View, Tenn.; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great

Scouts of America, 4-H and local home demonstration clubs. She enjoyed
gardening, quilting, sewing and raising rabbits. She is survived by her

Larry Law, age 75, of Portland, passed away February 23, 2008,
at his residence. He was born in Sumner County on January 15, 1933, to the
late William and Jane Law. Larry started a lifelong career in agriculture
in school, belonging to the 4-H Club. Then he was involved with Tennessee
Farm Bureau YF&H, The National Farm Organization, Sumner County Co-Op
Board of Directors, member of Darymen, Inc., and the Sumner County
Cattlemen's Association. Larry also took time to open his farm for farm
tours to help educate children in the benefits of agriculture, as an
example in the grain, dairy, and beef industry of agriculture. As an avid
trail rider and wagon master on trail drives, Larry enjoyed both, with
faithful stock, Sweet Pea and Billy Bob. He is survived by his wife,
Dianne Law of Portland; son, Robert (Lisa) Law of Portland; daughter, Anne
Marie Law of Portland; grandson, Trevor Parker Law of Portland; stepsons,
Chad Wilson of Portland, Grant (Laura) Wilson of Nashville; brothers,
William Berry (Sadie) Law, Jr., of Portland, Dewitt (Joanne) Law of

born in Sumner County on July 10, 1932, to the late Lewis and Ruth Rippy.
He was an ordained General Baptist Minister and a member of Mt. Pleasant
General Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Perdue Rippy of

Centers Short, age 89, of Portland, passed away June 29, 2008.
Born in Pineville, Ky., on March 3, 1919, to the late Nathan and Amanda
Myrtle Centers. Affectionately known in her family as “Grandee” and
“Chis,” she worked 27 years at the Federal Plant at Oak Ridge, and she was
a member of Edgemore Baptist Church near Clinton. After leaving that area,
she became a member of Hermitage United Methodist Church. She was preceded
in death by her husband, Arnold B. Short; sister, Carrie Wilson;
granddaughter, Lisa Ray Vaughan. She is survived by her daughters, Carolyn
Short (Gordon) Meadors of Portland, Thelma Short (Robert) Vaughan of

February 11, 2008, at Portland Medical Center. He was born in Somerville,
Tex., on December 23, 1923, to the late Ralph W. and Gertrude May Pickett
Simonton. He was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Mary Simonton;
and sister, Mary Carolyn Simonton. He is survived by his children, Anne
(John) Marlin of Portland, Dr. Ralph W. Simonton, III, of Portland, Dr.
Susan Simonton of Minneapolis, Minn.; 4 grandchildren, Kelley Marlin

avid golfer, he enjoyed working his farm and his Tennessee Walking Horses.

He spent 53 years in tractor sales and service, including being the owner
and operator of Sorrells and Gossett Tractor Company in Portland. He is

Tate of Portland; son, Tommy (Mitra) Sorrells of Orlando, Fla.; sister,

her residence. She was born in Sumner County on August 16, 1917, to the
late Jess and Eunice Brown. She is preceded in death by her husband,
Harold H. Wilkinson, and sister, Gaynell Austin. She is survived by her
daughter, Joyce Freeland (Bill) Kemp of Dallas, Tex.; sons, Charles H.
(Betty) Wilkinson of Portland, Larry (Janice) Wilkinson of Murfreesboro; 7
grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren;
longtime caregiver, Olivia Dotson. Visitation will be 4 p.m., until 8
p.m., Wednesday, March 12, 2008, and 4 p.m., until 8 p.m., on Thursday.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Friday, March 14, 2008, at Wilkinson &
Wiseman Funeral Home with Rev. Gordon Meador and Rev. Alex Jackson
officiating. Interment will be at Portland Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers
will be Alec Hardin, Danny Hardin, Jeremy Hardin, Roger Hopkins, Scott
Kemp, Ed Kirkpatrick, David Lyle and Jason Wilkinson. Memorial

Elsie Mary York,
age 91, passed away December 21, 2008, at Highland Manor. She was born in
Kewanee, Ill., on September 1, 1917, to the late Richard and Clara Pyle.
She is survived by her son, Charles York of Niles, Mich.; daughters,
Christine Sharpe of White House, Sandra Mulley of Colcord, Okla., Sharon
Beck of Marion, Mich.; 8 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren. A
memorial service will be held at 7 p.m., Friday, December 26, 2008, at
White House Seventh-day Adventist Church. |
