Willard M. Alderson, age 87, of Hendersonville, passed away September 4, 2008, at his residence. He was born in Sumner County on December 5, 1920. He is survived by his wife, Betty Frances Riley Alderson of Hendersonville; daughter, Barbara (David) Wims of Maryville; son, Larry (Patsy) Alderson of Hendersonville; grandchildren, Lori Alderson Cutrell, Elizabeth Ann Tyler, David Paul Green;  great-grandchild, Courtney Cutrell; sister, Josephine Riley of Gallatin. Funeral service will be 1 p.m., Saturday, September 6, 2008, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home with Rev. Gary Riley and Rev. Ryan Brown officiating. Interment will be at Maple Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bryan Riley, Jason Riley, Glen Riley, Mike Riley, David Green and Louis Cutrell. Garry David Atchison, age 68, of Hartselle, Ala., passed away Saturday, April 26, 2008, at his residence. He was born in Portland on May 31, 1939, to the late Paul and Edith Faullin Atchison. Mr. Atchison is survived by his wife, Joyce Atchison of Hartselle, Ala.; son, Brian Atchison of Portland; brother, Ronny Atchison and wife Carolyn of Nashville; nephew, Kevin Atchison of Manchester; step-daughters, Kim Sapp and Nesha Mahathy, both of Hartselle, Ala., and Nikki Long of Moulton, Ala.; stepson, Joel Sapp of Hillsboro, Ala.; 6 step grandchildren.   The body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to service.  Funeral service will be 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 29, 2008, at McKendree Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Alex Jackson officiating. Interment will be at Maple Hill Cemetery. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Hospice of the Valley, P.O. Box 2745, Decatur, AL 35601.
Benton Mac Barber, age 81, of Gallatin, passed away on May 2, 2008, at Vanderbilt Medical Center. He was born in Sumner County on December 23, 1926, to the late Benton MacMillian and Mary Aldridge Barber. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Barber. He is survived by daughter, Christy (Ricky) Young of Castalian Springs; sons, Benton R. Barber of Gallatin, Daryl (Barbara) Barber of Gallatin; grandchildren, Shelly Gregory, Shane Barber, Courtney Matthews, Sloan Barber, Allison Barber, Allison Young; great grandchildren, Jasmine and Kaleb Wilson, Qierra Gregory; sisters, Annie York, Helen Monday, Zelma Stinson; brothers, Lloyd Barber, Billy Joe Barber.  Visitation will be 4 p.m., until 8 p.m., Monday, May 5, 2008, and 1 p.m., until 8 p.m., Tuesday.  Funeral service will be 1 p.m., Wednesday, May 7, 2008, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home. Interment will be at Crestview Memorial Park.
Bettie Josephine Barber, age 76, of Hendersonville, passed away October 12, 2008. She was born in Davidson County on December 1, 1931, to the late S.B. and Bertha Bradley Bowling. She is survived by her son, Glenn Walker of Hendersonville; granddaughter, Mitzy Walker of Smyrna; daughter-in-law, Kay Walker of Portland; grandson, Teddy (Jody) Baird and their children, Caleb and Eli Baird. She was preceded in death by son, Barry Walker; grandson, Anthony Baird; sister, Annie Burton.  Graveside service will be 1 p.m., Tuesday, October 14, 2008, at Portland Memorial Gardens with Bro. Clayton Hall officiating.
Lorene Barber, age 87 of Portland, passed away January 17, 2008, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She was born in Davidson County on July 5, 1920, to the late Lon and Della Rippy. She is survived by her daughter, Kathy Stevens of Lafayette; son, Dan Barber of Hendersonville; 9 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; brother, Quinton A. Rippy of Franklin, Ky. Visitation will be 1 p.m., until 9 p.m., Sunday, January 20, 2008, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home.  Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 21, 2008, at Lakeside Church in Westmoreland, with Bro. Carolyn Young Jenkins Barnette, age 60, of Montgomery, Ala., passed away Saturday, March 15, 2008, with her family at her side, after a bout with cancer. She was born in Simpson County, Ky., on September 10, 1947, to Floyd Young Jenkins and Josephine Pinson Jenkins. During her family’s near 30-year stay in Montgomery, she was involved in the arts, education and the International Ministry at her church. She is survived by her parents, Floyd and Josephine Jenkins of Portland; husband, Charles Robert Barnette of Montgomery, Ala.; son, Charles Jonathan (Luanne Killian) Barnette of Madison, Ala.; daughters, Jennifer Jenkins Barnette of New York, N.Y.; Amy Carolyn Barnette of Memphis. There will be a visitation from 2:30 pm till 3:30 pm, Tuesday, March 18, 2008, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home.  Graveside service will be 4 p.m., Tuesday, March 18, 2008, at Maple Hill Cemetery.  The family requests that memorial donations be made to the International Ministry at First Baptist Church in Montgomery, Ala., or to the charity of one’s choice.
John David Benjamin, Sr., 73, of Portland, passed away January 17, 2008. He was born in Pennsylvania on July 13, 1934, to the late Austin and Flossie Gail Benjamin.  He was the owner of J.B. Motors and Benjamin’s One Stop in Ithaca, N.Y.,, and Benjamin Automotive in Portland. He is survived by his wife, Carol Benjamin of Portland; sons, John David Benjamin, Jr., of Spencer, N.Y., Douglas Robert (Jennifer) Benjamin of Portland; daughters, Denise (David) McDermitt of Ithaca, N.Y., Cindy Rollins of California; grandchildren, Brenna, Autumn, Alleana and Ian Benjamin, Brian McDermitt; sister, Naomi Cook of Monroeton, Pa. He was preceded in death by sister, Winona Schoonooer; brothers, Austin and Levergne Benjamin. Andy Russell Black, age 49, of Cookeville, passed away September 8, 2008, at his residence. He was born in Allen County, Ky., on May 18, 1959, to the late Andy P. and Mary Jane Black. He was a very skilled tool and die maker. He is survived by his wife, Susan Black of Cookeville; sons, Andy “Nick” Black of Cookeville, Stevie Black of Cookeville; sister, Carolyn Jones of Lafayette; several nephews. Lattie Myrtle Gant Borders, age 97, of Portland, passed away January 19, 2008. Born in Macon County on September 6, 1910, to the late Freeley and Isabelle Driver.  Survived by her daughters, Dorothy Williams of Portland, Derotha Overmyer of Indianapolis; sisters, May Doss of Lafayette, Anna Carter of Scottsville, Ky.; 9 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; 12 great great grandchildren. Preceded in death by husbands, Willie Gant and Larry Borders; son, Earl Gant; grandson, Gerald Williams.   Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m., Monday, January 21, 2008, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home with Bro. Leslie Henry Broner, age 77, of Portland, passed away October 23, 2008, at Portland Medical Center. He was born in Sumner County on December 16, 1930, to the late Leslie and Earline Groves Broner. He was preceded in death by sons, Bobby Broner and Jackie Broner. He is survived by his wife, Bertha Broner of Portland; daughter, Helen (David) Lame of Portland; sons, Billy Broner of Portland, Henry Earl Broner of Lafayette; 6 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren. Sheila Annette Brooks, age 46, of Oak Grove, Tenn., passed away May 14, 2008, at The Medical Center of Bowling Green. She was born in Sumner County on July 27, 1961. She is survived by her husband, Carl David Brooks of Oak Grove; daughter, Hannah Brooks of Bethpage, Tenn.; son, Jonathan Brooks of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; parents Glenn and Martha Fuller Carter of Bethpage; brother, Howard (Rita) Carter of Friendswood, Tex.; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Georgia Mae Brown, age 78, of Portland, passed away January 30, 2008, at Sumner Regional Medical Center. She was born in Davidson County on July 17, 1929, to the late Roy and Annie Hall Livingston. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Alford Brown, and brothers, Claude, Herman, and Russell Livingston. She is survived by her daughters, Betty (Danny) Richardson of Mt. Juliet, Darlene (Bill) Rush of Portland; 5 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; brothers, Paul (Juanita) Livingston of Portland, Willie Livingston of Portland, and Roy Livingston, Jr., of Portland. James Monroe Brown, age 84, born June 5, 1923, passed away March 29, 2008, at The Medical Center of Bowling Green, Ky. He is the son of the late Lee and Fannie Hardison Brown. Mr. Brown is survived by his wife, Lois Jean Brown of Franklin, Ky.; daughters, Sherry Shipley and Sandra Spry, both of Hendersonville, and June Brown, of Tennessee; son, Jimmy Brown of Hendersonville; step-sons, Tim Spurlock of Cottontown, David and Jim Spurlock, both of Nashville; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; sister, Frances Denney of Portland, Violet Hudnall of Hendersonville and Hazel Raines of Hermitage.   Visitation will be 1 p.m., until 9 p.m., Sunday, March 30, 2008, and 1 p.m., until 8 p.m., Monday.  Funeral services are 11 a.m., Tuesday, April 1, 2008, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home with Bro. Tommie Olice Brown, age 91, of Portland, passed away September 21, 2008, at Portland Medical Center. She was born in Macon County on November 30, 1916, to the late William Rice Bentle and Vangie Nell Harrison Bentle. She was preceded in death by her husband, Adrian Brown; son; Larry Brown; sisters, Mamie Hammock, Neva Meador; brother, Cleamon Bentle.  She is survived by her sister, Willie R. Bullington of Portland; several nieces and nephews. Larry Busch, age 43, of Portland, passed away February 26, 2008, at Portland Medical Center. He was born in Davidson County on October 2, 1964. Annie Margaret Byrum, age 80, of Portland, passed away October 23, 2008, at Westmoreland Care and Rehabilitation. She was born in Sumner County on July 29, 1928, to the late William Walter and Leona Walker Clubbs. She is survived by her daughter, Robin Brown of Portland; son, Bobby Ray Byrum of Portland; grandsons, Chris Troutman, Kevin Brown, Eric Brown, all of Portland; great grandson, Ethan Troutman of Portland; sisters, Mary Louise Fleming of Portland, Shirley Key of Portland, Dorothy Shelton of Ohio. Kenneth Lowell Cantrell, age 75, of Portland, passed away April 10, 2008, at his residence. He was born in Vian, Okla., on July 21, 1932, to the late Opie and Jennie Lee Cantrell. He retired from the U.S. Army. He is survived by his wife, Elaine Cantrell of Portland; daughter, Anita Carter of Altamonte Springs, Fla.; sons, David Cantrell of Cottontown; Daniel Cantrell of Cross Plains, Jonathan Cantrell of High Point, N.C.; sisters, Carole Skaggs of Ashland City, Dorothy Randall of Phoenix, Ariz., Juanita Turner of Pleasant View. Alice Rhea Mink Cash, “Granny Alice,” age 68, of Portland, passed away January 2, 2008, at Baptist Hospital. She was born in Robertson County on March 12, 1939, to the late William and Maffie Link. She retired from Sunbeam Corporation and H.G. Hill’s Deli. She was a member of Fountain Head Church of Christ. She is survived by her husband, James “Jim” Cash of Portland; daughters, Debbie (Mike) Pearson of Orlinda, Cindy Patten of Portland; sons, Bill (Debbie) Gamble of Portland, Larry “Joey” (Jamie) Johnson, Jr., of Portland; stepchildren, Angie (Chris) Gress of Stonefort, Ill., Debbie Burton of St. Louis, Mo., Johnathon (Reba) Cash of St. Louis, Mo.; 22 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren. Bobby Joe Clubbs, age 68, of Portland, passed away on January 22, 2008, at Portland Medical Center. He was born on March 21, 1939, to the late William and Leona Clubbs. He is survived by his daughters, Tina Jean Barnes of La Vergne, Penny Allison of Portland; son, Bobby Dale Clubbs of Goodlettsville; 4 grandchildren; sisters, Dorothy Shelton of Ohio, Annie Margret Byrum of Portland, Mary Lou Fleming of Portland, Shirley Jean Key of Portland. James Morris “Butch” Cornelius, age 67, of Portland, passed away December 22, 2008, at his home.  He was born in London, Ky., on August 13, 1941, to the late Eldon and Doris Cornelius. He is also preceded in death by his sister, Debra Coots, and brother, Jerry Cornelius. He retired as co-owner of the Portland Prescription Shop. He is survived by his daughter, Kimberly (Tim) Wakefield of Portland; son, James M. “Jim” (Cindy) Cornelius, Jr., of Knoxville; grandchildren, Gerald Todd Wakefield and Jennifer Anne Wakefield, both of Portland, Coutney Anne Cornelius and Kaycie Desiree Cornelius, both of Knoxville; former wife, Dorothy T. Cornelius of Hartsville; brother, Terry (Saundra) Cornelius of Nashville. Visitation will be 12 p.m., until 8 p.m,. William Carrol (Bill) Covington, age 81, of Robertson Co., born September 27, 1926 to Hubbard Ford and Viola Warren Covington. Passed away March 14, 2008, at Centennial Medical Center in Nashville.  Mr. Covington was an honored Korean War veteran, former Road Superintendent for Robertson Co., worked for the State of Tennessee at the Welcome Center and was on the Board of Directors for The Farmers Bank for 15 years. Mr. Covington is survived by his sister, Helen Hale of Cross Plains, Tenn., brothers, H.F. Covington, Jr., of Gallatin, and Clayton Covington of Florida; a loving friend, Jane Minnick, of Franklin, Ky. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sue Starks Covington; parents, H. F. and Viola Warren Covington; brother, John Warren Covington; sister, Elizabeth Ann Covington. Visitation will be from 12 noon until 9 p.m., Sunday, March 16, 2008.  Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m., Monday, March 17, 2008, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home.  Interment will be at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Robertson Co.
J.T. Crabtree, age 94, of Portland, passed away December 30, 2008. He was born in Gainesboro, Tenn., on March 9, 1914. He retired from the L&N Railroad after 44 years of service, was a Grand Master Mason, a church deacon, and was a member of the Portland Senior Citizens Club. He is preceded in death by his wife, Priscilla Crabtree; sons, James Theodis Crabtree, Paul Allen Crabtree; parents, Clarence and Ada Roberts Crabtree. He is survived by sons, Clarence Eugene (Clara Elizabeth) Crabtree of Portland, Matthew W. (Lauryn) Crabtree of Brentwood; beloved friend, Jean Brewer; sister, Willadean Gooch of Franklin, Ky.; daughters-in-law, Geraldine Crabtree of Gallatin, Nola Crabtree of Bowling Green; nephew and friend, Garrett Martin; 7 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and friend, Rhonda Sue McLean.   A wake will be held at New Hope Church on Friday, January 2, 2009,  from 4 p.m., until 7 p.m.  Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Saturday, January 3, 2009, at New Hope Church with Rev. Margaret McGraw Dunham-Vaughn,  90, of Portland. Born in Logan Township, Altoona, Pa., to Margaret Ella Lynn and George Irwin McGraw on January 11, 1918. Graduated from Altoona High School in 1936 and attended Washington Missionary College (Columbia Union College). She married Gerald Oscar Dunham on July 6, 1937. They had two children, Gerald Owen (Juanita) Dunham of Lafayette, and Dr. Donna (Merwyn) Crandell of Russellville, Ala. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Gerald Dunham; father and mother, brothers, George, Milton, and Edward; sisters, Laura Taggart of Philadelphia, Pa., and Katherine (infant). She served as Dean of Women at Highland Academy, 1952-1953, in Portland, Tenn. Gerald and Margaret Dunham served three years in the Caribbean Union of Seventh-day Adventist. Mr. Dunham as Treasurer in Barbados and auditor of the Caribbean Union in Trinidad and later treasurer of Highland Academy. In 2000, she married Russell Vaughn, formerly of Altoona, Pa., who also preceded her in death. She is survived by her son and daughter, 7 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren. James William Dye, III, of Portland, was born in Fountainhead on February 26, 1921, and passed away on June 4, 2008. He was preceded in death by parents, James W. Dye, Jr., and Clara Caudill Dye; sister, Mary Sue Dye Keller; and son, Joe S. Dye. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Tracey Dye of Portland; sons, Pat Dye of Richardson, Tex., Bob Dye of Boulder, Colo.; daughter, Nancy Alford of Woodburn, Ky.; 8 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren. Jim received a BS in Agriculture from Mississippi State University in 1943 and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He taught high school vocational agriculture in Pendleton, Ind., where he met and married Ruth E. Tracey in 1944. Jim then worked 31 years for the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a Soil Scientist. Following his retirement in 1976, he continued a career as a farmer and a producer of registered Black Angus beef cattle. He was a member of the Portland Church of Christ. Rebecca Norris Dyhouse, age 94, of Cross Plains, Tenn., passed away April 1, 2008.  Mrs. Dyhouse was born January 27, 1914, in the Mulloys Community of Robertson County to T.L. and Nellie Whiteside.  She is preceded in death by her husband, Victor Weiss of the Clearview Community and husband George Dyhouse of Pittsburg, Pa.; sisters, Louise Jones of Cross Plains, Evelyn Starks of White House; nephew, Ward Starks of Madison, Tenn.  Mrs. Dyhouse is survived by step-sons, Richard Dyhouse of Chicago, Ill., and Bob Dyhouse of Flushing, Mich.; nieces, Dora Hardcastle of Cross Plains and Oneal Gregory of the Clearview Community; nephews, Morgan Moore of the Clearview Community, Irvin Starks of Cross Plains, and James Weiss of Goodlettsville.  She is also survived by many grand- and great-nieces and nephews.  Mrs. Dyhouse passed away at the home of Rhonda Collins of Cross Plains.  Mrs. Collins and her family became an extended family to Miss Rebecca and were a source of great joy and comfort to her.  Mrs. Dyhouse is a graduate of Cross Plains High School and was a member of the Clearview Church of Christ for 62 years.  Known by most as Aunt Beck, Miss Rebecca or simply Becky, she lived a full and active life.  She enjoyed playing cards, dominos, gardening, flowers, travel, motorcycle riding, show horses and, most of all, her family and her friends.  Upon retirement, she lived in Arcadia, Fla., and Cross Plains.  She was involved in the early days of the organization of the NFO.  Visitation will be 3 p.m., until 8 p.m., Wednesday, April 2, 2008, and 11 a.m., until funeral time on Thursday.  Funeral service will be 3 p.m., Thursday, April 3, 2008, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home with Mike Moore and Lowell Harris officiating.  Pallbearers are Jackie Carter, Roy Gambrel, Jim Morris, Bill Pruett, Jody Starks and Jason Weiss.  Interment will be in Restlawn Memory Gardens, Franklin, Ky.  In lieu of flowers, donations to the New Deal Church of Christ Building Fund may be made.

Opal Reed Freeman, age 86, of Portland, passed away October 12, 2008, at Portland Medical Center. She was born in Sumner County on February 23, 1922. She is preceded in death by her parents, W.O. and Allean Carter Freeman; sister, Jewel Freeman McWhirter; brother, Charles Freeman. She was a graduate of Sumner County High School and attended Nashville Business College, Austin Peay and Middle Tennessee State College. She taught school at Buck Lodge and Hollis Chapel in 1949 and the early 1950s.  She was employed by the United States Civil Service for over 40 years, serving in the Federal Housing Administration in Memphis, War Department in Washington, D.C., and the Arnold Engineering Development Center in Tullahoma, Tenn. She is survived by brothers, Paul (Margaret) Freeman, Joe (Joan) Freeman of Portland, Jackie (Florence) Freeman of Franklin, Ky.; sister, Jean Freeman Taylor of Pleasant View, Tenn.; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Larry Law, age 75, of Portland, passed away February 23, 2008, at his residence. He was born in Sumner County on January 15, 1933, to the late William and Jane Law. Larry started a lifelong career in agriculture in school, belonging to the 4-H Club. Then he was involved with Tennessee Farm Bureau YF&H, The National Farm Organization, Sumner County Co-Op Board of Directors, member of Darymen, Inc., and the Sumner County Cattlemen's Association. Larry also took time to open his farm for farm tours to help educate children in the benefits of agriculture, as an example in the grain, dairy, and beef industry of agriculture. As an avid trail rider and wagon master on trail drives, Larry enjoyed both, with faithful stock, Sweet Pea and Billy Bob. Mabel Centers Short, age 89, of Portland, passed away June 29, 2008. Born in Pineville, Ky., on March 3, 1919, to the late Nathan and Amanda Myrtle Centers. Affectionately known in her family as “Grandee” and “Chis,” she worked 27 years at the Federal Plant at Oak Ridge, and she was a member of Edgemore Baptist Church near Clinton. After leaving that area, she became a member of Hermitage United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold B. Short; sister, Carrie Wilson; granddaughter, Lisa Ray Vaughan. Dr. Ralph W. Simonton, Jr., age 84, of Portland, passed away February 11, 2008, at Portland Medical Center. He was born in Somerville, Tex., on December 23, 1923, to the late Ralph W. and Gertrude May Pickett Simonton. He was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Mary Simonton; and sister, Mary Carolyn Simonton. He is survived by his children, Anne (John) Marlin of Portland, Dr. Ralph W. Simonton, III, of Portland, Dr. Susan Simonton of Minneapolis, Minn.; 4 grandchildren, Kelley Marlin (Brett) Alexander of Richmond, Va., Bryan (Carrie) Marlin of Hendersonville, Kari Marlin of Bowling Green, Ky., James Marlin of Austin, Tex.; great grandchildren, Zebediah Alexander, Cash Alexander, Maddox Marlin; sisters, Dorothy Johnson of Fayetteville, Tenn., Jessie Daniel of Charlotte, N.C. Dr. Simonton practiced medicine in the Portland area for 54 years, retiring at the age of 76. He was a retired member of the AMA, TMA, Sumner County Medical Society, Southern Medical Association, and the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders and Exhibitors Association. He was an avid golfer, he enjoyed working his farm and his Tennessee Walking Horses. Wanda Meador Stringer, age 49, went peacefully to meet God, June 22, 2008, at her Portland home. With her was her husband, Ronnie, their precious pets, Cassie and Scat, the love of their life; and her lovely sister-in-law, Patricia Davenport.
