Lenore H. Alden, age 91, of Portland, passed away Tuesday, December 1, 2009, at her home. Mrs. Alden graduated from Sumner County High School in 1935. She graduated from Western Kentucky University where she was a reference librarian at the Helms-Cravens Library for 17 years. She was also an advisor for Kappa Delta Sorority for many years. She is preceded in death by her parents, Watson Taylor Hardison and Eunice Marie Hill Hardison; grandson, Tommy Alden; daughter-in-law, Janie Alden; husband of 55 years, John Dale Alden, a former special agent of the FBI, who died in 1991. She is survived by her sons, Dr. John D. Alden, Jr., of Columbia, and his wife, Elaine; John Dale Alden, III, his wife Carrie, and their children, Maddie and Ben; Dr. Frank Alden of Sevierville, and his children, Frank Alden, Jr., of Baltimore, Md., wife Christine, and daughter, Ginny Alden of Nashville; daughter, Betty Alden Crosslin of Portland, her husband, Joe, and her children, Laura Cary Simmons of Jamestown, R.I., her husband, Lt. Col Steve Simmons, USMC, and their twin sons, Alden and William, and John Cary of Bowling Green, Ky., and his wife, Jennifer, and children, Alex, Easton, and Ashley. She is also survived by her former daughter-in-law, Melinda Alden of Gallatin. Visitation is 12 noon until 2 p.m., Saturday, December 5, 2009.  Funeral service is 2 p.m., Saturday, December 5, 2009, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home. Interment is  at Maple Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Portland Church of Christ Education Fund that Mrs. Alden founded in 1991 in memory of her husband.
Troy Allen Aldridge, age 60, of Portland, passed away October 7, 2009. He was born in Sumner County on June 1, 1949. He is preceded in death by father, Gus Aldridge; and brother, Donnie Aldridge. He is survived by daughters, Hope and Faith Aldridge of Portland; mother, Louise Wright Aldridge of Portland; brother, Roy (Pricilla) Aldridge of Portland; sister, Monecca (Larry) McGlothlin of Castalian Springs. Larry Wayne Amons, Jr., age 44, of Westmoreland, passed away December 15, 2009. He was born in Sumner County on March 20, 1965. He is preceded in death by his father, Larry Wayne Amons, Sr.; and grandparents, William Milton Amons, Jack and Mable Daniels. He is survived by his mother, Rosie Amons (Calvin) Gregory of Adolphus, Ky.; brother, William Earl (Lee) Amons of Westmoreland; grandmother, Lena Slabaugh of Bucyrus, Ohio; stepsisters, Kwanna’s Gregory, Stephanie Calvin; niece, Ashley (Robert) Kirk; nephews, Joshua (Ashley) Amons, Dell (Ashley) Inman; great nieces, Kayleigh and Kloie Kirk; great nephews, Collin Allens, Hunter Thompson. Peggy Jean Ashburn, age 75, of Portland, passed away November 6, 2009, at her residence. She was born in Davidson County on August 18, 1934, to the late Marvin and Naomi Chambliss. She is survived by her husband, James Douglas Ashburn; daughters, Tricia Kibbey and Dell Shaffer, both of Portland; son, Jimmy Ashburn of Ashland City; 10 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren. Jimmy Loyd Barber, 60, of Panama City, Fla., died on Monday, Oct. 12, 2009.  A Portland native, he was born May 4, 1949, to Loyd Barber and the late Bertha Ray Barber. He was a member of the Portland High School Panther football team, class of 1967. He traded in his Purple and White for Western Kentucky Red and White, becoming a star linebacker for the Hilltoppers, class of 1972. He was inducted into the WKU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000. He graduated from Auburn University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1977. He served as a Public Health Officer in the United States Air Force, retiring as a Major in 1997 after 20 years of service.  He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Mary Linda Barber of Panama City, Fla.; daughters, Laura Barber of Orlando, Fla., and Sarah Barber and Megan Barber, both of Panama City, Fla.; son, Kevin Barber of Los Angeles, Calif.; father, Loyd Barber of Frankin, Ky.; sister, Diane Barber-Miller of Bethpage; and grandchildren, Andrew Barber, Gabriel Barber and Michael Barber.  Visitation is 1 p.m., until 9 p.m., Friday, October 16, 2009.  Funeral service is 11 a.m., Saturday, October 17, 2009, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home with Gary Sullivan and Charles Wade officiating. Robbie Dean Barber, age 74, of Hopkinsville, Ky., passed away October 22, 2009, at her residence. She was born in Sumner County on May 27, 1935, to the late Vircle and Julie Wix. She is survived by her daughters, Carolyn Minton of Madisonville, Ky., Judy Crossfield of Russellville, Ky.; sons, Timmy Barber of Portland, Larry Barber of Hopkinsville, Ky., Leonard Barber of Hopkinsville, Ky.; sister, Clara Mai Maynard of Springfield, Tenn.; brother, J.L. Wix of Springfield; 28 grandchildren; 56 great grandchildren. Laura Mai Barlow, age 86, of Portland, went to be with her Lord on March 30, 2009. She was a member of Portland Church of Christ. Laura is preceded in death by her husband, J.D. Barlow. She is survived by sons, Terry (Tammy) Barlow of White House, Jim (Tammie) Barlow of Cottontown; grandsons, Brandon and Bryce Barlow; granddaughters, Paige, Payton, and Phebe Barlow; and several nieces and nephews. Lillian Marie Barlow, age 81, of Portland, passed away January 23, 2009, at Sumner Regional Medical Center. She was born in Hartstown, Pa., on August 20, 1927. She is survived by her children, James V. Barlow, Linda Pressler, John J. Barlow, Gail L. Porras, Michael Barlow; sisters, Dorother Supplee, Evelyn Harper, Mildred Weeks; brothers, Edward Chanley, Herbert Bancroft, Jack Van Orman, Terry Robinson, Robert Humphrey, Douglas Pernell; several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Robert Wade Belcher, age 79, died Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at Cumberland Manor Nursing Home in Nashville. He was born September 29, 1929, to the late Frank and Susan Petty Belcher. He was a retired iron worker. In addition to this parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, James Belcher and Sammy Belcher; his sisters, Maudie Mink, Marylee Bender, Belle Hardin; and his son, Ronald Belcher. He is survived by his wife, Peggy Sue Belcher of Crestview Nursing Home in Nashville; his son, Bruce (Carol) Belcher of Portland; his sister, Sue Carol Smith of Indianapolis, Ind.; daughter-in-law, Faye Belcher of Scottsville, Ky.; three grandchildren; five great grandchildren. James Edward Bradley, age 68, of Cottontown, passed away November 15, 2009. He was born in Pike County, Ky., on November 25, 1940, to the late Saul and Mary Bradley. He is preceded in death by his son, Kelly Ray Bradley; brothers, Phillip, Glen and Bobo Bradley; and sister, Louise Bradley. He is survived by his wife, Faye Bradley; daughters, Rachel Meadows and Jami Bradley; sons, Robert and Chuckie Bradley; grandchildren, Nicholas Evans, Deanna Meadows, Melinda, Charles and Landon Gunter, Shaun and Tyler Polly, Timothy, Matthew, Barbara Ann, Joseph and Wayne Bradley; brothers, Norman and Robert Bradley; sisters, Geneva Searcy, Linda Sue Porter, Anita Kay Gomez, Pearl Ann Moore and Joyce Jacobs. Mary Onezima Ralph Bradley, age 85, of Cottontown, passed away on Monday, January 5, 2009, at Baptist Hospital. She was preceded in death by husband, Lawrence Bradley in 1984; sister, Carleen Ralph; and parents, Luther and Hester Ralph.

 

She is survived by daughter, Lanita Bradley (Stephen) Boyd of Fort Thomas, Kentucky; son, Larry (Nancy) Bradley of Durham, California; and son, John R. (Elizabeth) Bradley of Hendersonville; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brothers, L.D. (Betty Ruth) Ralph, Jimmy T. (Wei) Ralph, Wallace (Jackie) Ralph; sisters, Juanita Hawkins, Evelyne (Frank) Harmon, Mina (Ollie) Smith, and Deba (Tommy) Gammons.

Mary Elizabeth “Mammie” Braswell, age 84, of Westmoreland, went to be with the Lord on July 27, 2009. She was born on March 25, 1925, to the late Herman and Carrie Simpson. She is the beloved wife of the late, C.B. “Tootie” Braswell.  She is preceded in death by her son; Rev. William “Rudy” Braswell. She is survived by children, Rev. Darrell (Debbie) Braswell, Charles “Vernie” (Gail) Braswell, Linda (Jackie) McMurtry; daughter-in-law, Wanda Braswell (Tony) Eaton; grandchildren, Phyllis Gilman, Melissa Brown, Sharon Watson, Felecia Pippin, Angie Clark, Shawn Braswell, Bryan Gregory, Anthony Braswell, Thomas Braswell, Jacob Caldwell, Jeremy Caldwell; great grandchildren, Andrea, Allison, Alexis, Alisa, Tyler, Zack, Nick, Luke, Savannah, Wyatt, Addie, Gracie, and Bradley. Selma Bridges, age 88, of Indianapolis, passed away February 23, 2009. She was born in Sumner County on May 12, 1920, to the late Ed and Bell Durham. She is preceded in death by her husband, Charles Bridges. She is survived by her son, Doug Bell of Indianapolis, Ind.; granddaughter, Tracy Lawyer of Pendleton, Ind.; two great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren. Edna Keith Briley, age 96, of Cottontown, passed away April 21, 2009. She was born in Robertson County on March 6, 1913, to the late James Thomas Keith and Fearby Ragland Keith. Edna was a member of Halltown General Baptist Church and a member of Rob Morris Order of Eastern Star. She is preceded in death by her husband, Maynard Briley. Claudine Staggs Brown, age 86, of Nashville, passed away November 23, 2009. She was born in Sumner County on September 4, 1923. to the late Henry and Zellie Street Staggs. Herman Bush, age 68, of Bethpage, passed away April 17, 2009, at his residence. He was born in Sumner County on March 22, 1941, to the late Herman and Annie Bush. Herman retired from General Electric. He is survived by his brother, Walter Eugene Bush of Indiana; sisters, Mary Frances Dalton of Georgia, Elizabeth Ann Williams of Portland, Sandra June Callis of Portland; several nieces and nephews. Lambert Merlin Buysman, age 73, of Cookeville, passed away September 20, 2009, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. He was born in Primghar, Ia., to the late Henry and Alice Buysman. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Glen Harley Clouse, age 90, of Portland, passed away January 1, 2009. He was preceded in death by his parents, Otis Reeder Clouse and Ida Holmes Briley Clouse; sisters, Irene Clouse, Catherine (Elbert) Stout, Lera (Carl) McCloud; brother, Jack (Louise) Clouse; infant daughter, Teresa Lee Clouse; son, Harley Delano Clouse. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Eleanor Cron Clouse of Portland; daughters, Phyllis (Don) Jones of Portland, Janice Mickle of Nashville; daughter-in-law, Donna Clouse of Owensboro, Ky.; grandsons, Kevin (Sue) Clouse of Bowling Green, Ky., Jason (Kim) Jones of Portland; granddaughter, Lara D. Clouse of Fuqua-Varina, N.C.; 2 great grandchildren; step sister, Carmen Roberts (Joe) Carter of Portland. A Portland native, Glen relocated to Michigan where he graduated from Vermontville High School. He returned to Portland where he has been a resident for 64 years. Tollie Washington Coakley, age 72, of Gallatin, passed away March 15, 2009, at Sumner Regional Medical Center. He was born in Sumner County on July 22, 1936, to the late Gill Moore and Emma Mae Coakley. He is survived by his sister, Carrie M. Coakley of Portland; brothers, Clarence W. Coakley of Gallatin, James E. Coakley of Richmond, Ky.; best friend and caregiver, Ferrell Shaw of Portland; a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Tollie retired from the U.S. Air Force.  He was an avid fisherman, and he enjoyed bowling.  While in the military, he was a member of a worldwide championship bowling team.  He was a Deacon of Parkers Chapel Church, and he served as the Treasurer for the East Fork District Baptist Association. Dewey M. Cole, age 67, of Bethpage, passed away December 28, 2009. He was born in Sumner County on April 23, 1942, to the late Lester and Jewell Cole. Elmore Allen Green, age 92 of Portland, Tennessee, departed this earthly world to be with his Heavenly Father on February 10, 2009, at N.H.C. of Springfield, Tenn. He was a wonderful husband and a loving father. He was a gentleman with respect for others. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, June Pitchford Green; daughter, Donna J. Witham of Deland, Fla.; sons, David A. (Peggy) Green of Eustis, Florida, Daniel H (Debbie) Green of Cross Plains, Tennessee; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and an untold number of friends and family throughout the world. He retired from Bellsouth Telephone Company and was a member of the Portland First Baptist Church and had over 20 years of service to the Oak Street Mission. He was a World War II veteran serving in Germany. He was a local historian and a contributor to Portland’s newspaper. He enjoyed photography, restoring antique gasoline engines and player pianos. Wesley P. Lewis, age 87, of Cottontown, passed away November 28, 2009. He was born in Maury County on August 9, 1922, the tenth child of John J. and Mae Adkison Lewis.  He is preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and three sisters. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Earline Lehman Lewis; daughters, Sandra Stinson of Hendersonville, Carol (John) Burnett of Rockwall, Tex., and Patsy (Larry) Davis of Joelton; grandchildren, Melissa (Ray) Clounch of Carrollton, Tex., Amy (Mike) Smith of Rockwall, Tex., Jeff (Mindy) Burnett of Rockwall, Tex., Greg Stinson of Hendersonville, Mike (Christy) Davis of Joelton, Brandy (Rodney) Cagle of Joelton; six great grandchildren; two step great grandchildren. As a teenager, he spent a year in California serving in the Civilian Conservation Corp and in World War II serving his country in the Navy as a radio man. He was an expert small engine mechanic, retiring from R.H. Chilton Co., then operating his own shop until health forced him to close. He was a Baptist and a 50-year member of Jere Baxter Masonic Lodge. Wilford C. Short (1928-2009), died peacefully in his sleep on Monday, December 14, 2009. He is preceded in death by his parents, Cleon and Buena Link Short. He is survived by his beloved wife for 60 years, Jean Pond Short; sons, Monty (Cindy) Short and Tony (Sherry) Short; daughter, Lee Anne Short Crafton; seven grand children and four great grandchildren. He was a graduate of Sumner County High School where he excelled in sports and public speaking. He attended Union University on a football scholarship. He served in the U.S. Marines and the U.S. Air Force. He retired from Boy Scouts of America after 20+ years as a Scout Executive. He served as Portland City Judge for 20 years. Jerry Lynn White, age 60, of Portland, passed away December 30, 2009. He was born in Sumner County on February 24, 1949. He is survived by his son, Ronnie Lee White of Scottsville, Ky.; mother, Mollie Ella Green White of Portland; sisters, Joyce (L.D.) Mangrum of Fairview, Pat (Larry) Mooneyhan of Portland, Louise (Jasper) Brown of Portland; brothers, Harold Dean (Dorothy) White of Goodlettsville, Donald Joe White of Franklin. He is preceded in death by his father, Leonard White. Harold Thomas Williams, age 73, of Portland, passed away December 11, 2009. Martin M. Zirkle, age 83, of Hendersonville, passed away August 6, 2009. He was born in West Virginia to the late Frank and Mable Zirkle.  He is a US veteran, having served in the Navy, Air Force and Army during WW II and Korean War. He is a member of The Lions Club of Auburndale, Fla., and a member of Auburndale VFW. He is survived by his stepdaughter, Marilyn Oden of Hendersonville; sister, Dolly Williams of Buckhannon, West Virginia; 11 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren.
