He was born on the “old home place,” as his father called it, on South Leath Road, which runs between Fowler Ford Road and Butler Bridge Road. He had two sisters and four brothers. He and the Perry family lived at several places before finally settling at Sulphura. He went to the Sulphura School, which was also called the Anderson School, for the first eight grades. He then transferred to Sumner County High School in Portland and graduated in the spring of 1955. He then entered Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville and received a BS Degree in Chemistry in 1959. He stayed for two more years and received an MA degree in Organic Chemistry. He then transferred to the University of Tennessee Medical Units in Memphis and obtained a PhD in Biochemistry. After graduation from UT, he went to the Department of Clinical Pathology at the University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB), where he specialized in Clinical Chemistry. In the spring of 1970, he left UAB and moved to the Department of Pathology at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. The Medical College of Wisconsin was at one time a part of Marquette University. There, he was the associate director of laboratories and director of laboratory operations, director of clinical chemistry and toxicology, director of quality assurance and director of support services. He was a member of numerous college committees, national professional organizations and was a national inspector of clinical laboratories for the College of American Pathology. In addition to his clinical service responsibilities, he taught clinical chemistry in the graduate program, the medical technology programs and to pathology residents. He published numerous scientific articles in professional journals. He retired as associate professor from the Medical College of Wisconsin in October 2002. He moved back to Tennessee in the spring of 2005. He was a world traveler, having visited many countries. He enjoyed the lifestyles and meeting people with various cultural differences. He has seen the best of life and the worst of life as he traveled around our globe. He always wondered how so many people with so many differences in their religious beliefs could be so different. He never thought that they were different but were doing the best they could with what God had given them.
