He spent his early years doing farm work and skipped school one year to work during the depression, but he was advanced and was given the 9th grade Rotary Club Academic Achievement Award.  He left Portland at age 18 to sell Bibles and books in the northeastern states with Southwestern Book Company for two years.  He began dating Helen Searcy after meeting her in a strawberry patch in Orlinda, and they married on October 11, 1941.  After marriage, they moved to Cleveland, Ohio, in order to find work during the war in a defense manufacturing plant.  Their first son, Doug, was born during this time.  Also, while in Cleveland, he served in the U.S. Army before receiving a medical discharge.  He worked for National Life and Accident Insurance Company in Nashville and moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where his only daughter, Shirley, was born.  Melvin was the youngest field sales supervisor in the U.S., and his promotions moved the family to Indianapolis, Indiana, and Paducah, Kentucky, over a five-year period.  For his Top 100 performance in the U.S., he was honored by becoming a member of the Century Club.  In 1947, his parents wanted him to return to Portland to help grow the Portland Hatchery Poultry Business, and he and his brother, Cecil, started the Portland Feed Mill as co-owners until the 1960s.  His second son, Ray, was born in Portland in 1956.  After the 1960s, he spent the rest of his career in agricultural sales, real estate sales, and insurance sales, and he traveled in many states.  Melvin walked the church aisle in 1946 in Paducah, Kentucky, to confess Christ as his Savior and was baptized. He and Helen have been members of First Baptist Church in Portland since 1948, and Melvin was an active Deacon in the 1950s.  He was a very close to Pastor Dewey Roach of First Baptist.  After retirement, he and Helen moved to Bellevue for three years, then spent five years in Mary Queen of Angels Assisted Living before moving to NHC Healthcare nursing home in 2010.

He was a good man, loved his kids and grandkids; but, most of all, his life was devoted to taking good care of “Miss Helen,” as he referred to her in later years.  She was the love of his life!  During the 70 years of marriage, Melvin and Helen never apart more than the three weeks when Melvin had back rehab in 2009.  The kids have spent the last 20 years helping them enjoy life through many two-month vacations in Florida.  They celebrated their 50th and 60th wedding anniversaries in chalets in Gatlinburg.  They renewed their vows on their 50th anniversary.  Portland has always been their real home, and their children are thankful God allowed them to have a father and mother that provided a caring and loving home.

Melvin will be laid to rest next to his father and mother; and, after 90 years, he has come home. “To God Be the Glory.”
